Although the trade name says petal, Jacaranda Petal is in fact one half of the tree’s round, flat seed pod. Split open and dried, each piece becomes a shallow woody disc. The inside is smooth and caramel-to-amber in colour, crossed by a dark, slightly raised seam, and edged with a pale cream rim. Turn it over and the outer shell is rough, matte and slate-brown.
This double-sided character is useful. Face-up, the pieces read as warm, glossy-looking ovals that brighten a darker potpourri mix; face-down, they add a weathered, stone-like tone. Their flat form makes them easy to glue onto wreath rings, frames and gift boxes, and designers often overlap them like shingles for a textured finish. They are sturdy enough for scatter décor on tables and trays.
