Few dried materials have as much gesture as Nataraj. Long, flat, ribbon-like stems rise from the base and then twist, fold and curl at the tips into irregular hooked and scrolled shapes. True to the trade name, the silhouette has a dance-like movement, with no two arms bending the same way.
The colour in the photograph is a weathered cocoa brown with greyish highlights where the surface has dried and split slightly, giving a driftwood-like finish. Used alone in a tall ceramic vase, a few stems act as living sculpture; in large installations they bring drama and line to hotel lobbies, stage sets and gallery-style displays. They also combine well with palm spears, cones and bold pods.
