Mouchak means honeycomb in Bengali, and the name fits. Each ball is built from many short lengths of hollow natural stick, set radially from the centre so that their open, cut ends face outwards. Looked at closely, the surface is a cluster of small round openings, much like the cells of a honeycomb.
The photograph shows a group of balls in several finishes: a natural wood brown, a bright red, a yellow, and a green with fine white striping where the colour sits on the outer skin. In each case the pale cut ends contrast with the coloured sides, which makes the texture stand out.
The rounded, spiky form works well in bowls and trays, as vase and jar fillers, and in potpourri mixes. Threaded or wired, the balls also become ornaments, garland elements and hanging décor, and they add a playful, handmade note to gift hampers and festive displays.
