One long, shaved strip of sola, wound round and round a core, gives the Sola Stripe Ball SO77 its pattern. Where each turn overlaps the last, a fine golden-brown edge shows, so the ball is marked with stripes that run in rings and tighten into small whorls at the ends.
The photographs show an ivory ball with a gently faceted surface, as the strip folds slightly at each turn. From some angles the stripes read as parallel bands; from others they spiral inward like a shell or a wood-grain knot. The stripe pattern depends on how each strip is wound by hand, so spacing, whorl position and faceting differ from ball to ball. The width and shade of the brown edge vary naturally with the pith.
