SO93 is made by coiling long, narrow ribbons of sola around and around, layer upon layer, until they form a rounded, slightly flattened sphere. From the top, the ribbons create a clear whorl of concentric rings; around the sides, the layers stack like the growth lines of a shell or the strata of rock.
The photographs show natural ivory ribbons with feathered, uneven edges, so the surface is rippled and fibrous rather than smooth. Small waves and folds in the coils add movement, and the close-up gallery image shows how finely the ribbons are layered.
