Mini Lotus SO48 is the simplest of the lotus forms, made from a small ring of broad petals rather than many layers. The petals are wide at the middle and taper to soft points, overlapping slightly at their bases so the flower sits open and nearly flat.
The centre is a single round bud of rolled pith, smooth and button-like, which gives the flower a clean focal point. The petal surfaces show the gentle striations and slight irregularities of hand-shaped sola, and in outline the flower also recalls a frangipani.
Its smaller scale and simple form make SO48 useful where larger lotuses would overwhelm the design: on greeting cards and stationery, as scatter on tables, along garlands, on small gift boxes and in miniature arrangements. It is also a practical base for colour, as the broad petals take dye evenly.
