Each piece is a long, gently curved half-shell, and its inner face is marked with a regular series of cross-ridges and seed hollows that climb from end to end like steps on a ladder. That face is a light tan with darker brown bands, while the outer back of the pod is smooth and a deep plum brown.
The photograph shows several halves laid together, some turned to show the patterned interior and others the dark exterior.
